What is covered in the Amazon Flex insurance policy?

When signing up with Amazon Flex, many drivers expect that Amazon will provide the insurance coverage they need while making deliveries. However, the policy only covers some accidents and incidents under certain conditions. It’s important that you find out what the policy covers and what it doesn’t.

The commercial policy via Amazon covers several items for drivers in California, including:

  • Liability – Drivers delivering for Amazon Flex get more than the minimum required liability coverage, up to $1 million per incident, in most states including California. This coverage applies when you are found to be at-fault in an accident, or when your actions are said to have caused damage to another party’s property. It covers both bodily injury to the third party and any property damage.
  • Contingent comprehensive / collision – The policy provides contingent comprehensive and collision insurance with a maximum limit of $50,000 per incident. Collision insurance covers damage to your vehicle when you’re at fault, while comprehensive insurance covers damage caused by poor weather or other circumstances. There is a $1,000 deductible, plus the driver is expected to carry collision or comprehensive coverage on their personal insurance. This is the contingency for the Flex policy to apply. In most cases, drivers don’t need to file a claim for damage repairs that are less than $1,000.
  • Uninsured / underinsured motorist – This additional coverage applies if involved in an accident that is caused by the other party, yet they don’t have the necessary coverage to adequately compensate you. The maximum cover is $1 million, and applies to bodily injuries that you and other occupants in your vehicle suffered, as well as your vehicle’s damage.
  • Towing and packages – This option applies when involved in an accident that disables your vehicle. Cases of stolen or damaged packages are covered by Amazon directly, except in cases involving fraudulent or illegal activity.

Although the Amazon Flex policy is quite robust, it doesn’t cover a few things, including your medical payments (should be handled by your own medical cover or the homeowner’s policy if injured on their property), and towing or roadside assistance resulting from mechanical failure.

Your insurance brokers can help you get the additional cover you need to address any gaps in your Amazon Flex policy so you are fully protected when operating your delivery business in the state of California.
